Resort-style living in Santa Clara

After an interior remodel, the clients wanted to improve the backyard functionality, as well as creating a seamless indoor/outdoor transition by extending the interior contemporary look.

The patio door opens onto a spacious deck with outdoor kitchen/dining area, protected by a pergola that shades also a seating area.

The same concrete Stepstone Inc. pavers connect the seating area to an open space, dedicated to lounging around a modern gas fire-pit, and to the pool area.

Concrete slabs around the fire-pit, and stepping stones leading to the side yard, are broken up by synthetic grass that merges into a wider strip allowing room for the dogs to play.

Strips of synthetic grass are also used to break up concrete slabs on the utility side of the yard, where the shed and vegetable garden are.

The same concrete pavers in a darker shade of gray are wrapped around the deck and repeated around the existing kidney-shape pool.

Planters, raised beds and low wood and concrete walls add interest and define the different areas; they also help keeping the dogs off the planted areas.

A portable hot-tub and a sauna complete the resort-style feel of this backyard.

Low-water and low-maintenance planting soften the hardscape.
