Backyard in Willow Glen, CA

The Client wished to transform the dusty backyard in a more functional space that could be used by the whole family to play, relax and entertain, including their two dogs.

It was decided early on that the lawn was not necessary and was wasting too much water.

The small concrete patio was converted to wooden steps, making room for a more spacious natural stone-paved patio that includes both a dining and a seating area with fire-pit.

To shield the dining area from the mid-day/afternoon sun without blocking the light into the house, we placed the dining area further away from the house.

A custom made play structure was added for the eight-years-old daughter.

Near the house, raised beds can be used for growing vegetables.

Throughout the garden, low-maintenance California natives and Mediterranean drought-tolerant plants provide interest all year round.
